I was at Michaels the other day and picked up this container of 50 Animal Pals cookie cutters - on clearance for only $2!!
I thought it would be a great addition to our kitchen...we could use them for years and always have the perfect animal cookie cutter on hand for all of the parties & holidays that will come up!
For Easter I wanted to make some treats, but didn't have much on hand. I found a cake mix that I had picked up after Halloween, and some decorating frosting I bought after Valentine's day. Can you tell I am a clearance shopper??
So I had cake mix but I didn't want a cake.... Then I found a recipe on the box for a cookie version instead of the cake. Perfect! I mixed the batter, 2 eggs, and some oil and we had cookie dough! We rolled it out and picked some cookie cutter shapes....we decided on a Bunny, Duck, Sheep, and Butterfly. I also mixed sprinkles in with the cookie batter so that they would be pretty :)
As you can see we had to get a little creative with the decorations since I didn't have any real frosting!
I used the tube of red frosting, M & M's, and some leftover meltable chocolate pieces. I threw the chocolates in a bowl, microwaved them, then put them in a pastry bag and piped the chocolate onto the cookies. I worked pretty well and they did end up looking frosted!
Even though we didn't have the best ingredients to start with, we had a lot of fun making these and made do with what we had in front of us! And these cookies certainly would not be able to win any awards....but we had a really nice afternoon together making these and in my book, that is what counts.
And I was probably the last person to find out that you can make cookies out of a cake mix.....and they turned out delicious!
